Chapter 17: Doran Hall

Maeve's POV

I got out of the car at the airfield gate, and Declan didn't move.

He stood on the gravel with the freezer bag in his fist, and he looked like he hadn't slept in a month.

"You came," he said.

"You said you'd wait. They told me."

"I didn't know if they would."

He held the bag out.

I looked at the key, still smeared with white icing, and I did not take it.

"Not yet," I said.

His hand dropped, and he nodded once.

"Conor has every crew boss in the hall tonight," he said. "He's going to say your name."

"I know. That's why I'm here."

"Then I'm driving you."

"Declan."

"I'm driving you," he said. "I'm not asking."

The lot outside the hall was full of black cars.

Our guards stood at the doors, and they saw my face and let their hands drop from their jackets.

"She's with me," Declan told them, and nobody argued.

The hall doors opened onto the long room where I had walked out through the middle, six weeks before.

It was just as full.

A hundred and twenty people sat at the tables, and every crew boss in Chicago was among them.
