Chapter 24: The Open Door

I typed two more names into the visitors field before I stood up from the commissary table.

Declan.

Finn.

I left the third line blank, because that name was not decided yet.

Eamon met me at the lab door and fell into step beside me without asking where I was going.

We walked down the long gravel road to the gate together, past the range and the hangar with the rule nine frame still hanging on its wall.

The wind was cold, and the sky over the mountains was clear.

The guard in the booth looked at his screen, and then at me.

"Who's cleared?" I asked him.

"Mrs. Doran, and now your two brothers," the guard said. "The third line is empty."

"Don't open it yet."

I stopped on the inside of the fence.

Conor was standing at the bars, a few feet away, in the same dark suit.

He looked tired, and he had not shaved.

"Mae," he said.

"Conor."

"I'm not going to ask to come in."

"I know. I read the log."

He glanced at Eamon, and Eamon stood very straight.

"You stood in front of my sister," Conor said to him.

"She stood in front of me first," Eamon said.

Conor's mouth twitched, and for a moment I saw our father.
