Chapter 6: The Feed Ramp
On the eleventh night I was alone in the lab at two in the morning, filing a steel lip by hand, when the keypad beeped.
Eamon Kerr came in with a mug in each hand.
He set one on my bench without a word.
It was black coffee, and it had gone lukewarm in the corridor.
"You're not on shift," I said.
"Neither are you."
He picked up the ramp and held it under the lamp.
I watched him find the lip I'd added to the shoulder and turn it over with his thumb.
He took a long time.
"This is new," he said.
"I fixed the angle you circled."
"It isn't the angle."
"It's the angle plus the one thing you didn't circle," I said. "A round comes up hot and rides the shoulder a hair too long. The lip catches it before it can tilt."
He ran his thumb along it again.
"Who taught you that?"
"My father kept a workshop," I said. "I fixed a jam for him once with a paperclip, and he never let me forget it."
He almost smiled.
It was the first time I'd seen his face do anything but frown, and it made the scar over his eyebrow lift.
"You were right about the shoulder," I said. "One in four hundred. I ran it and the number is real."
He put the ramp down.
"You didn't have to tell me that."
"It was true."
"Most people in this building would have hidden it," he said.
"Then most people in this building would kill someone."
That landed, and I watched it.
He looked at the wall for a moment before he looked back.
