Chapter 19: Friday Service

Nobody moved.

The ocean crashed behind the house, and the oxygen tank hissed.

Carmine stood in the middle of the room with his hand halfway to the coffee table.

"Hi," Archie said to the doorway. "You came to the beach?"

"I came to the beach," Pop said.

He looked at the gun, and the papers, and his elder son.

"Carmine. Put your hands where your mother would want them."

Carmine's hand went back to his side.

"Pop, I was only talking to her."

"With a gun."

"It's not even loaded right," Archie said.

Gianni came around the wheelchair, crossed the room, and picked up the pistol.

He didn't point it at anybody.

He took out the magazine and put both pieces in his jacket pocket.

Then he bent and lifted Archie off the couch, towel and juice box and tablet, and held him against his chest.

Archie allowed it.

He didn't even say he was too big.

"How did you find us?" Carmine said.

"Your wife," Pop said. "She told me you'd come here. You always come here when you lose. You came here when you were twelve and you'd failed math."

Carmine laughed.

It sounded like something tearing.

"So what now? You're going to put me in a cell? You don't put family in front of a judge, Pop. You told her so. At your own table."

Pop nodded slowly.

"Forty years I kept this family out of courtrooms," he said. "I kept one other thing, too."

He reached down beside his leg, into the bag that hung from his wheelchair, and took out a small bundle in an old kitchen towel.

He didn't unwrap it.

He didn't have to.

Gianni went very still with our son in his arms.

"Fishtown," Pop said. "Outside the bar. Eleven years ago. You threw it in the river, and the river was too shallow, and I had a man go in after it the same night."

Carmine stared at the towel.

"You kept it."

"I kept it. Your fingerprints are on it, because you never wore gloves in your life. Your brother's aren't."
