Chapter 17: The Phone

The phone had no passcode.

My sister had never believed anyone would pick up something that belonged to her.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the sheet, with the lamp on, and Raf sat beside me with his shirt unbuttoned and read over my shoulder.

I read it, and I did not skip.

It started on the fourteenth of June.

"He asked nothing," Paola had written. "I said yoga and he looked at his phone."

"Good girl," Ugo had answered. "Sundays?"

A week later she gave him the first of the Sundays.

I scrolled to August.

"The banker's wife is my sister," Paola wrote. "She doesn't know."

"Marvelous," Ugo said. "Keep him warm. Families fall from the inside."

Raf's hand closed on my knee.

"He knew," I said. "Then he has been steering both of us."

"Yes."

"The napkin. Ask your boss who paid for the Biltmore."

"He wanted you at my throat," Raf said.

"He wanted me away from your books."

I read on.

On the eleventh of October, Paola wrote, "She's sitting at his right hand. In front of all of them. In MY dress, practically."
