Chapter 14: The Song

I stood there with my hand on the door and let him cry behind me.

I didn't turn around.

I made myself think about the top of the cellar stairs.

His hand held out. Hers taking it. The band starting up again.

I opened the door and walked out, and I didn't close it behind me.

Rory was in the lobby, exactly where he'd said, with his arms folded and his eyes on the lift.

He saw my face and didn't ask.

He just walked out beside me into the cold.

By noon the two men were gone from the pavement.

By three they were back.

On Thursday, the seventh day, a woman in a gray suit came into the café at closing time with a leather folder.

"Mr. Lucchese would like to book the café," she told Jess. "For this evening. Exclusively."

"We're closed."

"He'll pay for the inconvenience."

She named a number.

Jess's mouth fell open.

Then she shut it and looked at me over the woman's head.

"Your call, love."

I thought about it.

"Take his money," I said. "Every penny."

"Then what?"

"Then I'll serve him."

Jess gave half of it to the dogs' home before the bank even cleared it. She showed me the receipt with enormous satisfaction.
