Chapter 16: Noon

The line went dead.

I put the receiver down on the desk.

The maître d' was watching me with polite, blank eyes.

I walked back through the restaurant to the table by the mirror.

Armando stood up for me.

I didn't sit.

"Who was it?" he said.

"What time did you open my box?"

He didn't move.

Nothing moved in his face at all, and that was how I knew. Nine years. I had seen that face across a hundred tables, when somebody asked him a question he'd already decided not to answer.

"I never opened it," he said. "I told you."

"Then say it again tomorrow."

"Gianna."

"Noon. Your hotel bar. In front of your men, and in front of Rory." I picked up my bag. "If it's true, it'll still be true at noon."

I walked out without my coat.

Rory came to the hotel bar with me at five to twelve.

He'd put on a clean shirt. His lip was still split.

He didn't ask what we were doing. I'd told him in bed at three in the morning, and he'd lain there in the dark for a long time and then said, "All right."
