Chapter 19: Seven Fishes
At eight o'clock on Christmas Eve I walked up the front steps of my own house on Rory's arm.
The stone was salted. The wreath on the door was the one I'd ordered every year for nine years, from the same florist, with the same red velvet bow.
Somebody else had ordered it this year.
Rory wore a dark gray suit his mum had made him buy on the high street, and he looked like he'd been born in it.
He had no gun. They'd have taken it at the door.
"Last chance to go and eat chips somewhere," he said.
"After."
"After. Right."
The housekeeper opened the door.
She stood there in her black dress and white apron, nineteen years in this house, and looked at me.
She didn't scream.
She put her hand flat over her heart, and her chin shook, and she stepped back to let me in.
"Signora," she whispered.
"Hello," I said. "I've missed your bread."
The ballroom was full.
They'd put the long table down the middle of the floor where I'd knelt.
Sixty people. White linen. Candles. The silver I'd polished every December.
