Chapter 24: Number Ten
"Mrs. Barrow," Rory said again.
"Again."
"Mrs. Barrow." He was trying not to smile and losing. "Mrs. Gianna Barrow."
"Again."
"Mrs. Barrow, you've got rice in your bra."
"I have not."
"There's a grain of rice," he said, very seriously, "right there."
He took it out with two fingers and showed it to me.
The cab driver laughed so hard he missed the turn.
The hotel was right on the river by Tower Bridge.
Jess had booked it, and Rory's mum had paid for it, and neither of them would tell us what it cost.
The room was at the top, with a long window full of the bridge.
Its towers were lit gold, and the river went by under it, black and slow.
A bottle of champagne was waiting in a bucket. There was a card propped against it in Jess's terrible handwriting.
DON'T COME BACK TILL MONDAY. I MEAN IT. THE DRAGON AND I HAVE GOT THE CAFÉ.
Rory read it over my shoulder and laughed.
Then he stopped laughing, because I'd turned around inside his arms.
I put my hands flat on his chest, on the gray suit.
His heart was going hard.
It had gone hard like that under my hand on the riverbank in October, the first time I touched him.
"Hello, husband," I said.
He bent his head and kissed me, very slowly.
He did now.
We both did.
"Take your suit off," I said against his mouth. "I want to see what I married."
His eyes went darker, but he didn't move.
"You first, Mrs. Barrow."
The way he said it went right down my spine.
"I liked that."
"I know."
"Say it again."
"Mrs. Barrow." He undid the top button of his shirt himself, and I slapped his hand away.
"I said I wanted to see."
So I undressed him.
Jacket first, off his shoulders and onto the chair.
Then the tie, slow, because my hands were shaking and I didn't care who saw.
The shirt next, button by button, and I let my fingers drag against his chest as I went.
There was the old knife scar across his ribs, white now, and I put my mouth on it.
He made a sound low in his chest, and his hands came up to my hips.
"I'm not finished," I said.
