Chapter 8: Sunday Boxes
Rory put the chairs down in the hall.
"Mum, keep her here," he said, already pulling on his coat.
"I'm coming," I said.
"No, you're not."
"Rory, if it's one of Armando's, I'll know him. You won't know all of them. You weren't there for the Sunday dinners."
He stopped with one arm in his sleeve.
Jess was already getting her car keys.
"She's right, and you know she's right," Jess said. "Stop being a hero. Get in the car."
We came in the back way, through the alley behind the arches, into Jess's kitchen.
I stood behind the swinging door where the little round window was.
Another round window.
I was starting to hate them.
The café was half full. Sunday afternoon. Couples with papers, a mum with a pushchair, the old man in the corner who took his tea with four sugars and had told me twice that my pastries were "too good for this street."
A man sat on the stool at the end of the counter with a coffee he hadn't touched.
He was in his fifties, heavy, with a gray mustache and a black wool coat.
I knew him.
I knew him so well my stomach dropped.
Armando's driver.
He had driven Armando's father before Armando. He had driven me to my wedding.
Every Sunday for years, he'd come to my father's bakery on Taylor Street at seven in the morning for the Lucchese family's box of pastries.
My father always put an extra one on top for him, wrapped separately.
He'd eaten it in the car.
Jess's Sunday girl was standing behind the counter, white-faced, holding a cloth.
