Chapter 16: Safe House
The Cortese lake house sat at the end of a gravel road, twenty miles north of the city, with a woodstove and no neighbors.
It rained on the roof all night.
Bruna made soup, because she said a kidnapping victim should not starve, and then she took her bowl up to the loft and shut the door with a loud, theatrical click.
The old captain and a second man walked the porch.
Two more watched the road.
Emanuele and I sat across from each other at a pine table with the ransom phone between us, dark and silent.
It would ring when Mariano had decided what to do about three black books and a cousin he had already mourned on the museum steps.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"Whatever you've been carrying since the hospital. You've been carrying it up and down this house like a tray."
He took a small black notebook out of his jacket and laid it on the table.
The cover was creased.
"Open it."
I did.
It was a column of dates in his square handwriting.
Sunday. Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday.
Beside each one he had written what Vittorio said that night, and what Emanuele had been asked to hold back, and what he had done with his face the next morning.
