Chapter 15: Verdict

At noon they rolled the white sedan up to the loading door of the restaurant kitchen, and the five bosses sat facing it.

Damian had come in a fresh suit.

He sat, and his lawyer sat beside him with a leather folder.

"A car in a scrapyard proves there is a car," Damian said pleasantly. "Vernon Lowe keeps all kinds of private business."

"Then let the private business speak," the old boss said. "Bring the boy."

Camilla's brother came in holding my hand.

He wore the clean shirt Maeve had ironed for him, buttoned wrong.

He looked at the five old men and then at the car, and his shoulders came up around his ears.

"Take your time," the old boss said, more gently than I would have believed. "Tell me who was driving."

"Camilla," said the brother.

Nobody moved.

"I told the lady at the yard. I tell you now. Daddy said nobody tells, and I am telling."

He pointed to the grille.

"The lady's coat is stuck in there."

One of the bosses got up, walked to the car and crouched at the front.

When he stood again, he had a strand of blue wool pinched between two fingers.

"It is as the boy says," he said.

Damian's lawyer cleared his throat.

"With respect, the boy is simple. His testimony is..."

"I am not simple."

The brother said it quietly, and every head turned.

"Camilla says that. Daddy says that. I am not."

"No," the old boss said. "You are not."

The door opened.

Camilla came in on Damian's other side, in a cream dress, with her hair brushed smooth and her eyes already full.

Two of Cillian's men walked Vernon in behind her, his wrists in cable ties and the bandage gone gray.

Camilla took one look at the car and stopped breathing.

Then she did what she always did and turned the tears up.
