Chapter 18: The Docks

Cillian's POV

I left the house at four in the morning so that she could not tell me not to.

I took the knife from the kitchen drawer, because I needed to learn whether I could carry it and not use it.

Then I drove to the Bronx and woke the old driver in his own kitchen.

He was in his undershirt, and he cried when he saw my face.

"I only drove him," he said. "I only drove."

"I know. Where does he keep a boat?"

He told me in under a minute.

The Keane freight shed stood at the far end of Van Brunt Street, past the last streetlight, with a loading dock that faced the water.

A cargo boat for Rotterdam left at five.

He had been told to have the car ready for six.

I was on the dock by half past four, and the water slapped the pilings in the dark.

The shed door was unlocked.

Inside there was one space heater, one lamp and a camp bed, and Damian Keane sat on a crate in his coat with a passport on his knee.

Camilla slept against his shoulder with her mouth open.

At the far end the man with the lisp, his face purple under a bandage, was pouring coffee into a thermos.

I did not say anything.

I walked in with my left arm in a splint and my right hand empty, and the lisping man dropped the thermos and ran.

I let him.

Damian did not get up.

"Cillian," he said pleasantly. "You look terrible."

"You look like a man waiting for a boat."

"Take the docks," he said. "Take the whole Keane territory. I'll sign it over now. You've wanted it for eight years."
