Four of Silvio's men stood along the dining room wall with their hands folded.
My coat lay on the table, turned out, with its pockets empty beside it.
Lila's notebook sat on top of the pile.
Silvio had been reading it.
"Sit down, Miss Tennison," he said.
"I'll stand."
"Sit," said Marianne, softly, from his left, "darling, please."
I did not look at her.
I took the chair at the far end, across the whole length of the white cloth.
Renata came in behind me and took the seat at Silvio's right.
She had put on lipstick.
"Your wife says this is a dead girl's doodling," Silvio said.
He held up the notebook, open to a page of small blue columns.
"She says the numbers are nothing.
"I'd like you to tell me what they are."
My mouth was dry.
