Chapter 23: The Wedding He Chose
The Ferrante Sunday table had never held so many people who did not belong at it.
Silvio looked down its length from the doorway.
Cousins and dock wives sat on one side.
On the other side sat Sartori capos in dark coats, with Bruno at their end, his sling gone and his arm stiff.
At the foot, in the chair that had been Ottavio's, sat the old Rizzo don with his cane across his knees.
He had come on his own, at Silvio's invitation, and had not said why he accepted.
Vittorio sat at Silvio's right with a cushion behind his back and a plate of food he was not eating.
The empty chair at the head of the table belonged to nobody.
Gianna carved the roast with a steady hand.
Silvio waited until the plates were full and the room was quiet.
Then he stood.
"I'm going to say something once," he said. "Nobody has to answer today."
He took the gold band off his finger.
It came off the way it never had on the wedding day, easily.
He held it up.
"This was made for me three years ago, from a glove stolen out of my gym."
"I put it on in a study at midnight because I had to."
"I wore it down the aisle because I'd said I would."
