Chapter 4: The Folder

Silvio put the folder on the bed and dropped it on Vittorio's chest.

Vittorio opened his eyes.

He had been awake for a while, Silvio could tell, because he did not look surprised.

"You went through my desk," he said.

"You went through my life."

Silvio had pulled on his trousers and nothing else.

His shoulder ached where the bite was, and his whole body felt used and still wanted more, which made him angrier.

Vittorio sat up slowly and let the sheet fall to his waist.

He did not touch the folder.

"Ask me," he said.

"How long?"

"Nine years. Your father's funeral. You were eighteen and you stood at the grave and you didn't cry."

"I thought, I want to know who that is."

"You were at my father's funeral."

"My father made me go. I stood at the back."

"And then you followed me."

"I watched you fight," Vittorio said. "Every one, until you quit at twenty-two. I sat in the last row. I never spoke to you."

Silvio's throat felt tight, and he made himself talk past it.

"The ring."

"I took one of your gloves from the gym three years ago and had a jeweler measure the inside."

"The pact was my father's. Your father's. It says a Ferrante."

"I never planned to be anything but patient."

"You said you asked for Gianna by name."
