Chapter 15: The Joke

Lacey's POV

The restaurant in East Nashville had a round booth in the back, and the groom had reserved all of it.

He stood up when we came in, tan from Belize, with a sunburned nose and a coffee cup the size of a bowl.

"There she is," he said. "The maid of honor. And my two favorite hostages."

"Hi," said Colt.

"Hi," said Jesse, and went red to the collar.

The bride was already sliding out of the booth.

She had no sunglasses on this time, and her eyes were clear and bright and very sharp.

She hugged me hard, and held on a beat past polite.

"Oh, I missed you," she said into my shoulder. "I missed you so much. You look amazing."

"I look like I slept in a truck."

"You look like you slept in a lot of places," the bride said, and let me go.

I sat in the middle of the booth because there was nowhere else to put me.

Colt slid in on my left and Jesse on my right, and the groom and the bride took the far curve.

It was a narrow booth.

I decided that was why both of them were pressed against me from hip to knee.

Five place cards stood on the tablecloth, folded in half.

I picked mine up.

It said LACEY, in the groom's fat black capitals, and nothing else.

I turned it over.

The back was blank.
