Chapter 24: Plus Two
The place card on Table 12 said PLUS TWO.
I read it standing in the same sage green dress, in the same barn in Leiper's Fork, with a plate of brisket in my hand.
It was in the same fat black capitals.
It stood by the same kitchen door.
"I told him I was retired," I said.
"He came out of retirement," said Colt. "For the sister."
The bride's little sister was getting married, and her older sister's husband had made the seating chart again.
He had not let anyone else touch Table 12.
He stood across the room in a rented tux with a marker behind his ear, watching me read it.
When I looked up he lifted both thumbs.
"I'm going to put him over my knee," I said.
"Promise?" said Jesse.
He pulled out my chair.
He was in a vest and a tie this time, and his curls had been cut for the occasion.
He was still the most beautiful boy I had ever seen.
His ears went red as he did it, and I saw the tips climb.
Colt took the chair on my left.
He had his cap in his hand and no hat hair at all.
I had stolen the cap in the car and refused to give it back until we parked.
"Lacey," he said. "Eat something. You've got that look."
"What look?"
"The one where you're about to be loud," he said.
"I'm always about to be loud."
"That's why we love you," said Jesse, and then looked around quickly to see who had heard.
Nobody had.
Everyone had.
A woman from the groom's church two tables down raised her glass to me.
The groom's mother crossed the barn floor carrying a plate in one hand, with her pearls swinging and her hair done up high.
She had on a navy dress.
She stopped at Table 12, and my whole body remembered the last time.
"Lacey," she said. "Honey. You look tired."
"I'm fine."
"You're not. Sit." She set the plate down in front of me, and it was brisket, and a roll, and a spoonful of the slaw I had gone back for twice at the last wedding.
"Thank you," I said, and meant it.
