Maija's POV

I did not stay.

I waited until I heard his boots on the pier, and then I pulled on my jeans and his coat and went down the ladder after him.

The county car idled at the end of the dock with its lights off.

A deputy stood beside it with his hat in his hands.

He was the young one from my first morning.

Matt stood a body's length from him in the snow, and neither of them was speaking.

"Miss Kallio," the deputy said, when he saw me.

"I'm not here for the sheriff."

"Then who are you here for?" I said.

He turned his hat around in his fingers.

"There's a warrant for Anders Lindqvist," he said.

"It isn't from this county.

"A state judge signed it yesterday, and it's sealed until it's served."

I did not breathe.

"Your lawyer sent the state patrol a copy of your recording on Tuesday.

"They have been looking at the county's salt contracts for two years.

"They needed a voice, and they needed a witness."

"I didn't send it to the state," I said.

"I sent it to a lawyer."

"The lawyer is a careful man," said the deputy.

He looked at Matt and at me, and he swallowed.

"I told you to move, ma'am.

"I took your plate to the sheriff that same morning, and he told me what to say to you.

"I've regretted it every day since."

"Why tell us now?" Matt said.
