Chapter 24: The Answer
"I don't know," Elias said into the dark. "The truck, I guess."
"Don't guess."
"Then the truck."
I turned on the lamp.
He lay on his back in my bed with his arm behind his head.
He looked completely at ease in the sheets, as if he knew he was staying.
"That's the wrong answer," I said.
"Is there a right one?"
"I'm not telling you. You'll have to say it yourself."
He laughed, low in his chest, and I put my mouth on his shoulder.
We stayed in bed until the light came gray through the blinds.
At some point I woke with his hand heavy on my hip.
His mouth was against the back of my neck.
"Morning," he said.
"Say what you want."
"I want you again."
"Good," I said, and rolled over.
It was slower this time.
He took his time kissing me, and I let him.
When he slid inside me, I held his face in both hands and watched his eyes.
He moved slowly, and I told him it was good, and he told me he could feel everything.
Neither of us said anything clever.
At the end I said his name, just his name, and he said mine.
The kitchen had one clean mug and the good coffee.
He made it in his jeans while I sat on the counter in his shirt.
