Chapter 26: The Thaw Council

"Death," Davy said. "For swearing? I swore too."

"You're eleven," said the sergeant. "They don't hang you till you're twelve."

Davy looked at him in horror until the sergeant winked.

Corvin rolled up the scroll.

"He can't hang me for an oath," he said. "Not if the Council says the oath was lawful. The old law is older than the crown."

"Then we go and make them say it," I said.

"We?"

I put my hand on my belly.

"All three of us," I said. "And I'm bringing a stone."

We went south when the Greywater broke its ice, at the beginning of March.

I was six months along by the physician's count, and bigger than any woman in the valley had ever seen at six months.

The midwife had looked at me over her onions and said "Twins, I'd say" without anybody asking.

Agnes had glared at her for saying it first.

Corvin went, with the physician, the sergeant and twelve men.

So did Agnes and Davy, though Davy argued for two days.

I went in a cart, because three people had told me I wasn't riding.

Behind my cart came an ox cart.

On it, roped down under a sailcloth, lay the two halves of the old runner stone from the bottom of the falls.

The Moon Council met in the old council house on the hill above Highcrown.

It was older than Ravenscar Hall.

Round, with a stone roof open in the middle to the sky, so the moon could see what they decided.
