Chapter 30: South
"I listen to a laundress," I said.
Nobody in the mill said anything.
"Four days," Corvin said. "It's four days to Highcrown on a good horse."
"Then we leave at first light."
Agnes turned around from the bound men so fast her braid swung.
"You'll do no such thing. You gave birth seven hours ago."
"And ran down a man at the bridge four hours ago. I'm a wolf, Agnes."
"You're a fool."
"That too." I looked down at my son. "She's holding somebody's baby up in front of the Council in four days, and telling the world it's hers. Because of a letter I wrote."
"You didn't write that letter to make her steal a child."
"No. But she stole one."
Agnes opened her mouth.
Then she shut it and went to pack.
We left at dawn.
The sergeant and twelve men. The physician in a cart, wrapped in every blanket the keep owned.
The midwife beside him, with her hands folded in her lap.
The man from the bridge, tied on a horse between two of our soldiers.
Agnes, who said she'd sooner be hanged than let anybody else change those babies.
And me, on the gray mare, with my son tied against my chest in a shawl and my daughter in a sling across Corvin's.
