Chapter 32: Nothing

The knife caught every candle in the hall.

Nobody moved.

The guards along the walls looked at the king, and then at the Council, and stayed where they were.

Corvin came up beside me.

I felt him gather himself to go.

"No," I said quietly. "Hold him."

I put my son into his arms.

Corvin looked down at the baby. Then at me.

He held still.

It was the hardest thing I'd ever asked him to do. I could see it in his face.

I walked toward Osric.

Ten feet. Eight.

He held the knife low.

"Barren," I said. "Say it again."

His mouth moved.

"Look at me, Osric. Look at what I'm carrying. Look at what your brother's carrying."

He didn't look.

"You said it at Midsummer in front of three hundred wolves. Three years I've kept a Millward in my bed." I stopped in front of the knife. "You hadn't been in my bed for two of them. You knew why. You let me drink the tea."

"You're lying."

"Then tell them." I pointed at the ring of gray-robed alphas. "Tell the Council the physician's lying. Tell them you can sire a child. Yes or no."

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

His eyes went past me, to the old man on the sergeant's arm.

"I don't answer to a miller's girl," he said.
