Chapter 7: The Safehouse

Duncan's flat sat over a closed bakery on the east side, and it still smelled of bread.

He had a kettle, a map of Zoria City pinned to the wall and a first-aid kit the size of a toolbox.

He looked at Vaughn Garrow standing in his doorway, soaked, with blood on his sleeve, and sighed.

"You brought the guard," Duncan said.

"He was shot at."

"He's the one who put you in a cell."

"He's also the one who covered me in the alley."

"I did not do it for you," Vaughn said.

"You did it with your whole body," Duncan said. "She told me on the way up. Sit. You're dripping on my floor."

Vaughn sat.

A splinter from the shot crate had opened his arm just above the elbow.

Astrid cleaned it with a rag and a bottle of brandy, and he did not make a sound.

"You could have left me on that roof," he said.

"You could have left me in the alley."

"I'm the chief of the guards at Devil's Isle. I'm supposed to take you back."

"You're supposed to do a lot of things."

She tied off the bandage and sat back on her heels.

"Here's the situation, Garrow," she said. "If I leave you here with no rules, you call somebody and I'm back in a cell by morning. If I turn you loose, you do the same. If I put you in the street, the Swintons' men pick you up."
