Chapter 7: Let Go
The last cut closed on a Thursday, and I took him to the cove at dawn.
I'd told myself it was the right thing.
I had said it so many times that I almost believed it.
He walked down the beach on his own legs, in my grandmother's old flannel shirt and a pair of my father's work pants I'd found in a trunk.
Gray light, cold sand, one gull.
The tide was out, and the water was gray-green, the same color as his eyes.
I stopped at the line of wet sand.
"This is it," I said.
He stood next to me and didn't say a word.
"It's about a mile out to the open channel. Aggie says the sea-folk keep a house in the rocks past the point. I don't know how to find it, but you will."
"I will."
"If you need anything, you can come back to the slip. It's yours. I mean, it isn't mine, but I won't turn you away." I laughed, badly. "Okay, I'm talking too much."
"You are."
"Go on, then."
He didn't move.
I shoved my hands in my pockets.
"You don't owe me anything," I said. "Rule three."
He turned.
His gray-green eyes were wet to the brim, and the hurt on his face was so plain that I flinched.
"Marnie, I do not wish to go."
"You've been giving me scales for a week like you were counting the days," I said. "You looked scared every time. You turned your face to the wall when I said I'd let you go. If you wanted to stay, why would you look like that?"
"That is not true."
"It's fine. You don't have to say it. Nobody has to say it."
