Chapter 19: The Waiting Room
The ED waiting room at two in the morning smelled of floor cleaner and wet coats.
A dozen people sat in the plastic chairs under the buzzing lights.
A man held a dish towel around a bleeding hand.
A young mother rocked a feverish toddler against her shoulder, and an old woman in a church hat dozed with her purse in her lap.
None of them had insurance, because people with insurance went to the clinic in the daytime.
Bev stood at the triage window with her arms folded.
Dalton Everhart sat in the middle of the room in the only good chair.
The Foundation's lawyer sat beside him, with her folder open on her knees.
I came through the sliding doors with my hair in a wet knot and Niles a step behind me.
Dalton rose.
"Niles," he said warmly.
"And Dr. Pallister.
I apologize for the hour."
"What do you want?" Niles said.
"A quiet conversation."
"At two in the morning, in an emergency room."
