Chapter 21: Ledger
"He is not confused," said Sybil Everhart.
She had reached the microphone on her cane before the ushers could stop her.
She stood at the lectern in her silver gown with one hand on the wood, and Dalton stepped back.
"That is my son," she said.
"He is Niles Walter Everhart, and he is the only person in this building who has told the truth in three weeks."
The hall rustled.
"Aunt Sybil, you're not well," Dalton said gently.
"I'm very well.
I have never been so well in my life."
She faced the guests with her chin lifted.
"I refused my son when he asked to see the books, and I will not refuse anyone tonight.
He left because of what I said, and I let him go.
That is my failure, and I'll carry it.
I will not carry my nephew's as well."
A cold silence fell.
"The week after we buried my husband, my nephew brought a paper to Walter's study.
I was in black and I had not slept.
I signed the page he put in front of me without reading it."
