The Missing Heir novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Sunday
Sybil Everhart climbed my two flights of stairs on Sunday with her cane in one hand and a pie in the other.
She stopped on the landing to breathe, and Bev, behind her, took the pie out of her hand.
"I have climbed cathedral towers," Sybil said, "and I have never seen a staircase like this one."
"It smells like cabbage," Bev said.
Niles stood in my doorway in an apron, with a wooden spoon in his good hand.
He kissed his mother on the cheek, and she patted his arm and looked at my kitchen.
It was the size of a phone booth, and it held four people and a pot of chicken and dumplings.
She sat in the only chair that wasn't wobbly.
Bev took the stool.
I leaned against the refrigerator, because there was nowhere else to be.
"This is the smallest room I have ever eaten in," said Sybil.
"It's the best smell I have ever eaten in," she added, a moment later, as if surprised.
