The drivers left at four, and Irena asked me to stay.
She did not ask Marek.
He was at the sink in his shirtsleeves with a dish towel over his shoulder, washing the roast pan, and she let him.
The kitchen smelled of caraway and coffee.
She stood at the counter with her small hands folded and her white braid pinned up.
She looked tired in a way I had not seen before.
"Kathleen," she said. "I have something to give you."
"Marek said."
"Marek does not know what it is." She nodded at the shelf above the stove. "Bring me the tin."
I looked at the dented flour tin.
It sat on the high shelf where it had always sat, behind a row of jars.
"The one nobody touches?" I said.
"The one I am telling you to touch."
I dragged the step stool across the linoleum.
At the sink, Marek's hands had stopped moving.
I climbed up and took the tin down in both arms.
