Chapter 14: Marek's POV

Marek's POV

I left the third floor at four, while Kathleen was still asleep, and I did not wake her.

By five I was sitting in the cab of the number two truck in the yard on Southampton Street.

The engine was running and the heater blew cold.

The yard was dark except for the light over the office door.

Eleven trucks stood nose to tail along the fence, with frost on every windshield.

I had not started a single one.

The passenger door opened.

My mother climbed up into the cab in her church coat, one small hand on the grab bar, with a thermos clamped under her arm.

I had never once seen her in my yard.

"You came on the bus," I said.

"The Number Seven. It is cold. Move the heater."

I turned the dial, and she unscrewed the thermos and poured coffee into the lid and held it out to me.

I took it because my hands needed something to do.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I said.

"Because you would have gone to the police for me," said my mother. "You would have walked in and said it was you."

"Yes."

"That is why."

She folded her hands in her lap and looked out through the frosted glass at the trucks.

"Three weeks I watched you look at that girl," she said. "You looked at her with your whole face. I thought, the chair is gone from between them. Let him have something."
