Chapter 21: The Banquet Cards
Shuhua held the dress bag out at arm's length.
"I sat up all night with the machine," she said. "It's silk. Red. Your father's colour."
Mengyao stood in the bedroom doorway with the quilt around her shoulders, blinking.
"Ma."
"Wear it or don't. Wear your cardigan with the sleeve out at the elbow." Her voice shook. "I'll be at the table at noon. I don't know yet what I'll do."
"You're not going to make me wear the green?"
"The green is in the bin."
She went back down the stairs before anyone could answer.
The banquet hall at the Lakeview Hotel had a ceiling hung with gold lanterns and a long red carpet.
By noon, a hundred and ten guests were seated.
Ninety wore dark suits and silk blouses and spoke softly.
Twenty-two wore bus company jackets in faded blue, with a tea seller in the middle holding a thermos.
Gao's mother looked at them.
Table twenty stood at the front.
Mengyao walked up the carpet in the red silk dress, with the red cardigan over it, and her chestnut hair brushed smooth.
Anqi walked a step behind in the cream blouse.
On the table sat the printed cards: Gao Chenyu and Xu Mengyao, one line, gold.
Beside it, in the neat black pen of a structural engineer, stood two new cards on the bride's side.
Zhou Anqi.
Xu Mengyao.
Side by side.
Haoran sat at the next table with his hands flat on the cloth, looking at no ceiling at all.
Mengyao picked up Gao's card, turned it over, and set it face down.
Then she sat in the chair that said her name and Anqi sat in the chair beside her.
