The Movers Carried Out My Marriage and Stayed for a Beer novel · Chapter 12 of 24
Chapter 12: The Ticket
Dependable Movers of Smyrna opened at seven on Saturday.
At one minute to seven I was standing at the front counter with two cardboard coffees and a speech.
The office was a cinder-block room with a map of Cobb County on the wall, a coffee maker that hissed, and a plastic fern.
Darius stood behind me in the doorway with his cap in his hand.
"Amber," he said. "Please."
"You've said please four times since the car."
"I don't want you to..." he said.
"Hush."
The owner came out of the back with a clipboard.
He was in his fifties and heavy in the shoulders, with reading glasses pushed up into gray hair.
He had the tired eyes of a man who ran a business with trucks in it.
He looked at me, and the coffees, and the very large employee blocking his light.
