Chapter 20: The Dental Chair
Amber's POV
I let him in through the staff door at seven on a Saturday night, with the dentist's spare key still warm in my fist.
The office was dark except for the exit sign over the back hall and the green glow of the sterilizer.
It smelled of mint and rubber gloves, which is the smell of my entire working life.
"Is this allowed?" Darius whispered.
"Why are you whispering?"
"Because it feels like a church."
"It's a root canal factory." I locked the door behind him. "I took the key on purpose. Wednesday. I put it in my purse and thought about this the whole drive home."
He looked down the hall at the row of treatment rooms, and he swallowed.
"Which one's yours?"
"Number three."
I led him by the hand.
Room three had a window onto the parking lot with the blind pulled, a rolling stool, a sink with a paper-cup dispenser.
The big reclining chair with its lamp swung up and out of the way.
I pulled the stool aside and patted the leather headrest.
"Sit," I said.
"There?"
"Not on it. Take your shirt off, then your shoes."
He stripped for me with his eyes on my face.
When he stood bare to the waist in my little room, the ceiling tile was an inch from his head.
He looked out of place in my little room, and he looked right.
I was wearing my scrub top over a lace bra I had bought on my lunch hour.
I took the top off and hung it on the hook where it lives.
I climbed into the chair.
I lay back and pressed the foot pedal, and the chair hummed and tilted me flat, my head low and my knees high.
I planted my heels against the cushion at the foot of it and spread my knees.
"Open wide," Darius said.
It came out with a crack in it, and a smile.
