Chapter 17: Hangar Thanksgiving
"No," Warrick said, four weeks later, at six in the morning. "Absolutely not."
"It's Thanksgiving."
"It's a hangar."
"It's the only room on this strip that fits everyone."
Gussie was already dragging the Super Cub out by its tail into the snow.
The sun barely cleared the ridges now. It rolled along them for two hours, and then it was night again.
By two in the afternoon the camp families were coming in on snowmachines, headlights bobbing down the river.
They brought moose roast and smoked salmon and a whole turkey somebody had flown in from Fairbanks frozen solid in October.
The cook took over the bunkhouse stove and banned everyone from the bunkhouse.
The trapper brought a fiddle.
The kids found the Otter's wings.
There were six of them up there by three o'clock, sitting along the leading edge with their legs dangling, throwing popcorn at the grown-ups.
"Get off the wing," I said.
"Luna said get off the wing!"
None of them moved.
"I'm unbound," I told Warrick. "They know I can't make them."
"I'm bound to all of them, and I can't make them either."
"Use the voice."
"On a wing? It's Thanksgiving."
The girl I'd flown to Fairbanks was up there too, four years old and fine now, with a cast-iron grip on the boy from the strip's hood.
She saw me looking and waved a whole fistful of popcorn at me.
I waved back.
Something in my chest went warm and stupid.
On the hangar's back wall, next to the old Beaver under its tarp, I'd hung the whiteboard.
COLDFOOT SCHEDULE, in my handwriting.
Every camp up the Koyukuk. Every family on a lake. Mail Mondays, freight Wednesdays, fuel Fridays, and a standing slot for the clinic run to Fairbanks.
