Chapter 26: What Was Heard

Annalise's shoulders dropped.

I watched it happen from the middle of the floor.

Her hands came down from her headset. Her face went smooth and calm, the way Warrick's had in the snow.

"The unbound woman," she said.

Then she stopped.

Her jaw locked. A vein stood up in her neck.

I took a step, and the enforcer's hand closed on my arm.

"Don't," he said quietly. "Not on the floor."

Annalise was shaking all over.

Her mouth fought her, and her mouth won.

"The unbound woman attacked me," she said.

Then she gasped.

She bent over with her hands on the table and breathed.

Elden spread his hands to the hall.

"There. In her own words."

Annalise straightened up.

"Not my words," she said, hoarse. "His. You all heard him give them to me."

The hall went very still.

"He's done it before," she said. "Six years ago, at my parents' dinner table. Ask my mother what she watched."

At the Tennant table, my mother's hand went to her mouth.

"That's why I cry when anyone says her old name. It started as his."

"She's hysterical," Elden said. "She's spent four days with these people."

Annalise was already pulling her headset back up over her ears.

She switched it on.

Then she took off her brown parka, found a seam in the lining, and ripped it open with her teeth.

She held up a sandwich bag with a black card in it.

"Elden told me to destroy this," she said, too loud now, because she couldn't hear herself. "I didn't. It's the wing camera."
