Chapter 29: Owed
Warrick looked at me for a long moment.
"That's May," he said.
"I know when it's May."
"That's five months."
"You're still waiting for a pie that isn't soup. You'll live."
He rolled onto his back and laughed at the ceiling until the bed shook.
"Okay," he said. "May."
That afternoon I took the chain off the Cub with the brass key.
I flew her home myself, Juneau to Yakutat to Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle, with the Otter a mile off my right wing and Gussie talking on the radio the whole way.
When I landed on the Coldfoot strip, the boy from the strip ran out and hugged the tail.
In January my father sold Tennant Air.
The High Alpha had offered him every contract back the week after Midwinter, with a letter.
He sold them, with the Lake Hood hangar and the yellow sign, to an outfit in Anchorage that had wanted them for ten years.
It paid the fuel company. It paid the hired man, who went back to Kenai.
It left him one plane.
He flew Seven-Kilo north on skis in the middle of January, in the dark, and landed on our lake.
Better than the hired man. Not as well as me.
He walked up the bank to where I stood with my arms folded.
He didn't bring a logbook this time. He didn't bring anything.
"I need work," he said.
I waited.
He looked at the snow.
Then he looked at me.
"I'm asking," he said. "I'm asking if you'll have me."
The pack was watching from the hangar door.
"Freight Wednesdays," I said. "Fuel Fridays. You fly my schedule, my way. I inspect your plane before every flight, on my back."
"That's insulting."
"That's the rule. Everybody's plane."
He breathed out through his nose.
