Chapter 10: Of Counsel

I called him back before I'd decided to.

He picked up on the first ring.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"You didn't take the pictures."

"I came to your truck. Twice. With his baby."

"I invited you in. That one's on me." There was clattering in the background, the sound of a truck being closed up. "They want two million dollars by the end of the month. I have eleven thousand. And a very nice grinder."

"Did you say anything about Blake in those photos?"

"I said 'lunch.'"

"Then you didn't breach anything. Send me the whole letter. Every page."

"Margot, you don't have to..."

"Send it."

He sent it.

I read it on Vivian's couch with Rosie asleep on my legs.

Then I opened a blank document and started typing.

I hadn't written a legal letter in seven months.

It came back.

The photos showed two adults and a baby at a coffee truck. Nothing in them was confidential.

The NDA was six years old and drafted by Blake's own lawyer.

And no agreement in California can stop a man from reporting fraud to a board, a court or the government. Any clause that tried was void.

I cited the statute. I cited two cases.

I ended it with one line that I read three times before I kept it.

"Your client may wish to reconsider before his own photographs become an exhibit."

Vivian had gotten off the phone.

She was standing behind the couch, reading over my shoulder.

I hadn't heard her.

"Whose letter is that?" she said.

"Cliff Newberry's. The co-founder. Harper took the pictures."

She took the laptop off my knees without asking and read it again, scrolling slowly.

She made one small edit.

Then she handed it back.

"I've been doing this twenty-six years," she said. "I have three associates. None of them would have found that second case."

"It's an old case."

"So am I." She sat on the arm of the couch. "Come work for me."
