Chapter 18: The Engineers

I turned the laptop around.

Cliff read it. Vivian read it over his shoulder.

Nobody said anything for a second.

"It could be him," Vivian said. "Blake. Fishing."

"It could," I said. "He doesn't write in full sentences, though."

"Fair."

Cliff was still looking at the screen.

"Vendor payments," he said. "That's somebody in finance engineering. They built the payables system. I designed the first version of it on a napkin."

"So you'd know if they were real."

"In five minutes."

I typed a reply with Vivian reading every word.

"Don't send me anything from a work computer. Don't take any documents. Friday, 8 a.m. The green coffee truck outside Mitchell Park Library. Order a decaf and say it's for Margot."

I read it back once and pressed send.

Then Cliff and I washed Vivian's only pan.

She dried it, very slowly.

On Friday I got to the library at seven-forty.

Cliff already had the awning up.

He'd made a sign in marker and taped it to the window.

FRIDAY SPECIAL: THE WHISTLE. $0.

"Too much?" he asked.

"Take it down."

"It's a little funny."

"It's very funny. Take it down."

He took it down, folded it, and put it in his back pocket.

At eight sharp, three people walked across the parking lot together.
