Chapter 31: The Office
"What does it say?" I asked.
"Hang on." More paper. "It says LINWOOD AND CHEN. With an ampersand. Gold on navy."
I sat down on a kitchen stool.
"Who changed the order?"
"A Ms. Chen. Tuesday. Paid in full, plus the rush." He paused. "She also asked if we sold almonds. We don't."
"Deliver it," I said. "Tomorrow at eight."
I hung up.
Cliff was leaning in the kitchen doorway with Rosie's sock in his hand.
"Problem?"
"Vivian Chen bought herself a name on my door."
He grinned slowly.
"That's not a problem," he said. "That's a merger."
At eight the next morning, two men in work shirts were on ladders outside the bakery on Bryant Street.
The sign was going up over the stairs to the second floor.
Navy, with gold letters.
LINWOOD & CHEN
Vivian stood on the sidewalk underneath it in her black suit, holding two coffees.
She handed me one without looking away from the sign.
"It's crooked," she said.
"It's not crooked."
"Left side, a quarter inch." She raised her voice. "Left side!"
The man on the left ladder adjusted it a quarter inch.
"Better," she said.
"Vivian."
"I know."
"You have thirty-one floors on Montgomery Street. You have three associates. You have a hedge fund client on retainer."
"I have a hedge fund client who calls me at midnight about his yacht." She sipped her coffee. "I'm fifty-two. I've been taking men apart for twenty-six years. I'd like to spend the next ten putting a few women back together."
