Chapter 6: Tuesday Group

I didn't answer him.

I looked at his sunglasses until he got bored and walked down the steps to his car.

Vivian watched him go.

"Let the magazine run," she said. "You can't stop a press that's already printing. You can make it embarrassing later."

"How?"

"By being right in public." She opened the car door for me. "Meanwhile, I want a name. Kestrel had two founders when you drafted those papers. Who was the other one?"

"Cliff Newberry. He wrote the first code. Blake said he leaked it to a competitor. He was gone before Rosie was even an idea."

"Where is he now?"

"I have no idea. Blake says his name like it's a swear word."

"Then he's my favorite person in this whole story," Vivian said. "Find him."

It took me ten minutes on Saturday night.

Cliff Newberry had no social media and no company.

But a food blog had written up a coffee truck in Palo Alto called Newberry's.

The photo showed a big man with a beard handing a cup out the window. He wasn't smiling.

The truck parked outside Mitchell Park Library on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

There was a new-parents group in the library on Tuesdays at ten.

I'd thrown away the flyer for it twice.

On Tuesday I went.

The community room had a ring of folding chairs and a rug covered in babies.

A woman in her late sixties with short white hair was running it. She had been a midwife for forty years and said so in the first minute.

"Name, baby's name, how many hours you slept," she said. "Go."

A woman with twin boys in a double stroller went first.

"Me, the twins, and I'm not answering that, it's personal."
