The invitation was printed on cream card, and it was addressed to "Miss Holliday and guest."
It had come with the Thursday post, and Jasper had held it up to the light in the kitchen.
"The lake club brunch," he said. "Fifty neighbors on one terrace. She wants an audience for you."
"Then I'll give her one."
"Carys."
"I'm not hiding from a woman who steams envelopes."
He grinned at last.
"Then I'm your guest," he said. "And I'm wearing my good linen."
The club sat on a point of land with a white terrace over the water.
Round tables, mimosas, a string trio.
Every head turned when we came up the steps.
Odette stood at the center table in pale blue, pearls at her throat, a champagne glass in her hand.
