Chapter 13: Above the Collar

Kyle's POV

I knocked at eight exactly, in the blue collared shirt I had bought on my lunch hour.

I expected to be thanked and sent home.

I had spent the whole drive to Papillion practicing how to take it.

At Wayne State the coach had posted the travel roster on the locker room door.

I had learned to read a list for my own name without letting my face move.

Renee opened the door in jeans and a gray sweater, her bare feet on the hall floor.

She looked at the shirt, then at my collar, then at my face.

"Come in," she said.

I came in, and she shut the door behind me and stood with her back against it.

"You asked me in the stairwell how I knew your name," I said. "You never got an answer."

"I'm asking again."

"I was in the lobby for my second interview three weeks before I started. It was raining, and I was early."

She said nothing.

"There was a widow at the front desk, loud, in a yellow raincoat. She was going to every person who walked past, and then you came in from the parking lot and held the door for her."

"I held the door," Renee said slowly.

"She shouted, 'Thank you, Renee Vavra, you're the only one who called me back.' You said, 'You're welcome.' You didn't even stop walking."

My neck was heating, and I let it.
