Chapter 14: Lights On
Tyler's POV
She had left the front door unlocked and the porch light on, and a yellow sticky note was stuck to the glass at eye level.
It said: Come up.
It was Thursday, and I had been wearing a clean shirt since six.
The house was lit from the hall to the stairs, every lamp on, the way she kept it now.
I took the stairs two at a time, and then I made myself take the last three slowly.
The master bedroom door was open at the end of the hall.
She was standing at the foot of the bed in the green silk robe, with Greg's pillow in both arms.
"Hold on," she said.
She carried it past me into the hall and set it down on the carpet outside the guest room.
She came back and dusted off her hands.
"That's the last of him in here," she said. "The rest is in the garage in boxes, and it's going to Goodwill."
"Okay."
"Don't say okay like that. Say you're glad."
"I'm glad," I said. "I'm very glad."
She laughed, and her whole face opened up with it.
Then she crossed to the window and took hold of the curtains, one panel in each hand, and pulled them as wide as they would go.
The glass showed the dark side yard, and my own bedroom across it, with the blinds up and the desk lamp on.
I had left it on that morning so she could see it from here.
"Now the big light," she said.
She reached over and flipped the switch by the door, and the ceiling fixture came on over the bed.
It was bright, almost too bright, and she stood in it with her hands at her sides.
