Chapter 17: Truett Reads the Ledger
The court went out the back door at seven, one car at a time, the way they'd come.
The queen hugged me at the door.
"I'm doing it right tomorrow," she said. "Even if you're not there."
"Especially if I'm not there."
Her father shook my hand on the step.
He held on a second longer than he needed to.
He didn't say anything.
He just looked back over my shoulder at the long mirror, and then he went.
Gussie made a pot of coffee at nine at night, which she only does for funerals and hurricanes.
Emmett picked up saucers off the floor.
I sat on the piano bench and looked at the picture of my face on a security list.
"We'll get you in," Gussie said. "I'll put you in my trunk."
"You can't put me in a trunk."
"I put a whole turkey in that trunk last Christmas. You're smaller than that turkey."
Somebody knocked on the front glass.
Not a slam this time.
A knock.
It was Truett.
He was in jeans and an old college sweatshirt, and he hadn't shaved.
