Chapter 21: Fat Tuesday
"You're welcome to sue the owner of 1420 Government Street," I said. "After eleven tomorrow morning, that's me. And eleven friends."
I held the papers up so she could see the banker's name.
"We're very hard to take things from, Margot. We keep everything."
She stared at the page.
Then the lobby clock struck twelve, and it was Fat Tuesday.
"Happy birthday," I said.

The detective opened the door, and the cold came in, and Margot went out into it.
The bail hearing was at nine the next morning, on the third floor of the county courthouse.

She was thirty years old that morning.
She saw her parents and started crying, the real kind this time, ugly and red.
