Chapter 14: The Informant
Two men in dark coats stood on the sidewalk in the rain.
Zeke was out of the sedan, standing between them and the door.
"I drive her," he was saying.
"Not tonight," said the bigger one.
I opened the door before anybody did something stupid.
"I'm coming," I said.
They put me in the back of a gray car. Zeke's headlights followed us all the way up the hill.
Hesketh lived in the white captain's house at the top of the old town. Every window was lit.
They walked me into a library with a fire going and the curtains drawn.
Hesketh sat in a wing chair by the fire, fully dressed, his cane across his knees.
The three old men sat in hard chairs facing him with their coats still on.
The fuel dock man. The ice house man.
And Emmeline's father, in his blue blazer, staring at his own hands.
Hesketh's grandson leaned in the corner by the window, smiling.
"Miss Rendell," Hesketh said softly. "Orson Garside left this island forty minutes after his own engagement toast. On a state police launch. From my harbor."
I said nothing.
"Miss Weatherby came to see me at eleven," he said. "She was very upset. She tells me Orson has been talking to the state since September."
"She also tells me you have," Hesketh said. "She says the two of you have been handing them my Table one page at a time. She says the baby is how they keep you on a leash."
I looked at Emmeline's father.
Her own fiancé, on a police boat, and she'd told the old man herself.
Because Orson was out of reach now, safe on the mainland with his deal.
And I was standing right here.
"Half of that is true," I said.
The grandson laughed out loud.
Hesketh lifted one finger and he stopped.
