Chapter 20: Norfolk
"I didn't bring any money," I said.
"Sure."
"They took my wallet at the door. Check with the guard."
He sat back in the plastic chair and folded his arms, the compass on his hand turned toward me.
"Then what do you want?"
"I want you to tell the truth about the wharf job."
He laughed.
"The truth," he said. "I'm doing nine years for a liquor store. You want me to go in front of a grand jury and add a dead man?"
"Yes."
"I don't know you, lady. I never saw you in my life."
"No. You saw a paper bag."
He didn't move.
"Twenty thousand dollars," I said. "The ninth of March. In the garage under the cannery. I took it out of the bank, and I put it in his hand, and he told me it was for a boat engine. And two nights later you burned the co-op fish house to the waterline."
He leaned in fast and lowered his voice.
"Shut up."
"Orson's told the state it was me," I said. "That I set it up. That I paid you."
"That's his problem."
"It's mine. I'm having a baby in June. If they believe him, she's born in Framingham."
