Chapter 30: Guilty
"Breathe," Zeke said. "Ris. Breathe. Look at me."
I looked at him.
I breathed.
The fist around my stomach let go, slowly, one finger at a time.
"Pickup," Mavis said. "Now. Clinic."
He carried me.
All the way across the lawn, past the white tents and three hundred people, with Mavis running ahead to get the door.
The doctor kept me on the monitor for three hours.
The squeezing came twice more, then stopped.
"False labor," she said, and peeled off her gloves. "Your body's practicing. She isn't ready yet."
"She felt ready."
"She's a Rendell. She likes to make an entrance." The doctor pointed a pen at me. "Feet up. No stairs. No yacht clubs. No arrests."
"I didn't arrest anybody."
"You were standing near one. That counts."
Mavis took the orders personally.
For a week I wasn't allowed to lift a coffee pot.
Zeke brought a sleeping bag into the back room and slept on the floor beside the cot, between me and the dory crib.
The first night I woke at two and found him awake, watching the ceiling.
