Chapter 9: The Doctor's Chart
Rhett's POV
I did not sleep at the cottage on Sunday night.
I lay on top of the blanket with the window open and listened to the river and replayed the table from Saturday.
Her knee under my hand.
The way she had not moved it.
I had been in places where I could not feel my own legs, and I had never wanted anything as much as I wanted to push her chair back and take her out of that porch light.
It was also the first time in five years I had wanted something and said so.
At four on Monday morning I gave up and made coffee.
At five I sat on the dock with the cane across my knees and looked at the mist coming off the water.
I thought about the hospital.
I thought about it on purpose, because I had been avoiding it.
A white room in Germany, nine days on my back, and Bridget at the bed telling me it was final.
I had never asked to see the paper.
She had read me everything else.
Then I thought about the number I had pressed hard into a motel pad, and the phone I had handed my sister at the airport.
She had told me later she lost it in a move.
I had said it was only a phone.
I looked at the water.
My stomach did not agree.
A heron lifted off the far bank and went down the river without a sound.
