Chapter 15: Three Steps and a Tube

Lucy's POV

Fourteen people turned their heads as I came down the length of the walnut table.

The sheets lay in a long row under their hands, and every one of them had my initials in the corner.

Ada stirred against my chest, and I put my palm on her back.

"I'm not here about the drawings," I said to Constance. "You own those. I signed that away, and I know it."

"Then why are you here, darling?"

"For the page in front of Rosalind."

I picked it up.

I looked at my own signature, small and fast, and I remembered the day.

"I was twenty-six," I said, to the board. "Your chairwoman called me into her office and put eight pages in front of me."

"She said it was the termination paperwork. She held the pen out, and she said it was late and she was sorry to keep me."

"I signed where she pointed. Nobody told me what this one said."

I put the page back down.

"That is how I gave away my own building. I didn't know I was doing it."

The old director took off his glasses.

"Constance," he said. "Is that how it was done?"

"I did nothing improper." My mother-in-law's voice was perfectly level. "Lucy has had a very hard month. She is exhausted, she is hormonal, and she has an infant with her in a boardroom."

"Take your baby home, dear."

"She has a name," Harrison said.

It was the first thing he had said since I walked in.

He was looking at Ada, the way he had looked at her in the unit, with no guard on his face at all.

Rosalind saw it.

She stood very straight at the end of the table, in black, with her hands pressed together.
